Not A Moonwatch… ‘The First Omega In Space’ Speedmaster Anniversary

Oct 07, 2024 – OMEGA takes a misty look back in time and pays tribute to the first OMEGA in space with the new ‘First OMEGA in Space Speedmaster Anniversary series’, yes, quite a mouthful. Don’t be fooled in thinking this connects back through time to the OG Moonwatch though, because that’s not the case. The first OMEGA in space actually left our atmosphere some years before the iconic 1969 moon mission in 1962 as part of the Mercury program. It was astronaut Walter Schirra who took the honours, wearing his CK2998 model OMEGA Speedmaster as his personal wristwatch on his mission.

The new model is a stunning retro take on the original, with a 39.7mm diameter. The dial is beautifully ‘aged’ with vintage style brown markers under the sapphire crystal glass. The caseback in engraved with the date of the mission, 3rd October 1962 and the immortal line ‘THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE’ which should settle any pub arguments if your friends haven’t heard of Walter Schirra or his Mercury mission. The new Speedmaster is a couple of thousand more expensive than the standard Moonwatch, but we reckon worth it for that credible vintage understated style!
